Why I Keep Returning to Olu Deniz, Turkey

Olu Deniz Turkey

Olu Deniz is one of those places that once you visit, you can't help but keep coming back. I find myself here twice a year, every June and September, drawn in by the beautiful scenery, welcoming locals, delicious food, and perfect weather. There’s just something about this place that feels like home, and I want to share why it has become my go-to destination time and time again.

Why Olu Deniz?

Olu Deniz isn’t just a breathtaking beach town—it’s a perfect base for exploring nearby areas like Fethiye, Hisarönü, and Ovacik, all just a short drive away. This means I never feel stuck in one place, as I can easily switch things up with a change of scenery, new restaurants, or different activities.

The weather in June and September is ideal—warm enough to enjoy the beach all day and cool enough at night to go out without needing a jacket. I love being able to stroll around in the evenings without having to think about layers. However, if you visit in July or August, expect extreme heat, sometimes reaching the 40s°C!

Getting to Olu Deniz & First Impressions

The easiest way to reach Olu Deniz is by flying into Dalaman Airport. The airport itself is one of the most expensive I’ve ever been to (a McDonald’s Happy Meal does not leave your wallet feeling very happy).

Travel Tip: Oddly enough, for the last two years, the best exchange rate has been at the airport arrivals lounge. I would definitely seek that out on arrival.

For transfers, I always book a private taxi through Moonlight, which costs around £80 return per vehicle, whether it’s a car or minibus. The drive from the airport is something I always look forward to—winding up through the mountains, the smell of pine trees, and then that first breathtaking view of the bay as you descend into Olu Deniz. No matter how many times I’ve seen it, it never gets old.

Where to Stay in Olu Deniz

There aren’t many villa or apartment options in Olu Deniz, so I prefer boutique hotels for a more personal touch. Two of my favourites are:

S3 Orange Hotel – A small but charming boutique hotel with an amazing on-site restaurant (their Turkish breakfast is a must!). The pool area is small but always sunny, and you’ll get a laugh from the paragliders screaming mid-spin as they land nearby.

White Hotel – A lovely boutique-style hotel with a relaxed atmosphere, spacious rooms, and a great pool area. Its location is ideal, just off the main strip, making it a perfect option for a peaceful yet convenient stay.

No matter who you’re traveling with—solo, with friends, or with family—Olu Deniz has accommodation options for every kind of traveller. Whether that is B&B or all-inclusive.

My Favourite Things to Do in Olu Deniz

My trips to Olu Deniz are my ultimate relaxation breaks, the ones where I truly switch off and unwind. Honestly, a lot of my time is spent relaxing by the pool with a good book or two. But when I do decide to get out and about, a visit to the Blue Lagoon is always top of the list.

Travel Tip: Skip the crowded public area and head to one of the private beach clubs for a more serene experience. My top picks:

No trip is complete without a day on a boat. Explore hidden coves, swim in crystal-clear waters, and enjoy a relaxing day at sea. You can board from either Fethiye Harbour or Olu Deniz beach, but if you're less steady on your feet, I’d recommend Fethiye Harbour for easier access.

For first timers, I always recommend a Jeep Safari. Jump in a 4X4 and head to some of the local highlights—a traditional Turkish village, Saklikent Gorge, mud baths, and Patara Beach. It’s non-stop fun with plenty of history, nature, and adrenaline-fuelled water fights.

Travel Tip: Wear your swimwear and pack a towel in a dry bag because you will get soaked!

Sunset olu Deniz from Tiki Bar

Sunset drinks on the beachfront are a must. My go-to spots? Tiki Bar and Buzz Bar.

Then there are the nearby towns of Fethiye, Hisarönü, Ovacik and the Ghost Town of Kayaköy—all within a 5–15 minute drive.

Travel Tip: While taxis are reasonably priced, hop on a Dolmus (local bus) for around 60–75 TL per trip (about £0.75–£1).

And of course, the markets and shops! Monday’s market is in Hisaronu, Tuesday’s is in Fethiye. Missed them? No problem. Olu Deniz and Hisaronu are packed with shops waiting to take your Lira.

Travel Tip: Pack lightly! You'll probably come home with extra clothes and bags from the markets.

What haven’t I done… Paragliding from Babadag Mountain. It’s one of the most popular activities here, and one day I’ll be brave enough to try it!

Night Time in Olu Deniz

If there’s one thing, I never get tired of in Olu Deniz, it’s the food. Here are my top 5 favourite restaurants:

🍽 Antique – Authentic Turkish cuisine with fantastic service.
🍽 Tiki Bar – Great for drinks and a relaxed, fun atmosphere.
🍽 Bella Gusto – Delicious Italian food with a great view.
🍽 Celebrity Lounge & Grill Bar – Excellent food and a lively vibe.
🍽 Mimoza – A wonderful spot for seafood lovers.

The main strip comes alive after dark. If you want to party, VIP Dance Bar is the place to go. Prefer something more low-key? Head to the side streets for cosy bars with live music and a chilled-out vibe.

Safety for Female Travellers

I’ve been to Olu Deniz many times as a solo female traveller, and I’ve always felt safe here. You may get some attention, but a polite “no thank you” and walking away always does the trick.

Why I Keep Coming Back

If you’re visiting Olu Deniz for the first time, don’t miss a trip to the Blue Lagoon, a boat tour, and sunset drinks on the beachfront. But beyond the sights and activities, what truly keeps me coming back is the welcoming atmosphere, incredible food, and breathtaking scenery.

For me, Olu Deniz is more than just a holiday destination—it’s a home away from home. And that’s exactly why I know I’ll keep coming back, year after year.
